Summary:
This innovation utilizes geophysical instruments (i.e., GPR) moving across the ground to figure out what is under the earth’s surface. The question involves finding out where the object is located within a centimeter. To overcome the localization or registration challenge, the team turned to the smartphone technology and incorporated photogrammetry tools/capabilities.
The key aspect of this invention relates to being able to visualize the subsurface objects into a 3-D form. This is where the gaming world was incorporated into the invention by leveraging augmented reality (AR) to render the 3-D maps.
This invention enables the ability to move the geophysical instrument (i.e., GPR) in a freeform manner to subsurface map information in a 3-D format.
